Summer School on the European Railway System at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome

This edition of the Summer School on the European Railway System at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering of Sapienza University was the perfect chance to come in close contact with the railway universe. From 10 July until 19 July, 32 students from 7 countries and various European universities had the opportunity to do so.

As part of the European project STAFFER, funded by the Erasmus+ programme, Sapienza University of Rome organised the "Summer School on the European Railway System." The programme included 32 students from 7 European countries and 9 universities6 of which are STAFFER partners (le Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers of ParisDresden Technical University, the Universities of Applied Sciences of Erfurt and Sankt Pölten, the University of Belgrade and Sapienza itself).

The course topics included the European regulatory framework, interoperability, signalling systems, particularly ERTMS/ETCS, sustainable propulsion, green mobility, safety management, and risk assessment.

In addition to the theoretical part, the programme included several technical visits, to railway traffic control rooms, maintenance workshops, signalling system laboratories, construction sites and a visit to the Italian Railway Museum of Pietrarsa (Naples). This edition attendees had the chance to socialize and exchange with fellow attendees during the social dinner and during the guided tour of the monuments of ancient Rome.

The program concluded with closing remarks from its organizers and coordinators but also with a key interactive session with the students in which they expressed their impressions on this year's Summer School.
